How it works

The tool first normalises your input: whitespace and dashes are stripped and letters are uppercased, which fixes the most common paste problems. The cleaned string is then tested against the official PAN pattern — exactly five letters, four digits, and one final letter (AAAAA9999A). Within a valid PAN, the first three letters are an alphabetic series running AAA to ZZZ, the fourth letter encodes the holder type (P for individual, C for company, and so on), the fifth letter is the first letter of the surname or entity name, the four digits are a sequential number, and the last letter is an alphabetic check character computed by the Income Tax Department.

A PAN is not a random string — every position carries meaning. The first three characters are a sequential alphabetic series. The fourth character declares who holds the PAN: P for an individual, C for a company, H for a Hindu Undivided Family, F for a partnership firm, A for an association of persons, T for a trust, B for a body of individuals, L for a local authority, J for an artificial juridical person and G for government. The fifth character is the first letter of an individual's surname, or of the entity's name for non-individuals. Four digits follow as a running serial, and the final letter is a check character generated by the Income Tax Department's own algorithm.

Be clear about what a format check proves — and what it does not. This tool confirms that a string is structurally capable of being a PAN and decodes its holder type; it cannot confirm the PAN was ever issued, is active, or belongs to the person quoting it. The check-character algorithm is not public, so no offline tool can validate the last letter. For real verification — before paying a vendor, deducting TDS or onboarding a customer — use the 'Verify Your PAN' service on the Income Tax e-filing portal, which checks the number against the department's live database and confirms the name matches.

Knowing when a PAN is mandatory helps you understand why validation matters. Under Rule 114B of the Income-tax Rules, PAN must be quoted for many transactions: opening most bank accounts, cash deposits above prescribed limits, buying or selling immovable property above ₹10 lakh, motor vehicle purchases, mutual fund investments above ₹50,000, hotel bills above ₹50,000 in cash, and more. Employers need it for TDS on salary, and banks apply higher TDS rates when a valid PAN is not furnished. A single mistyped letter can misdirect tax credits, so a quick format check before submitting a form is cheap insurance.
