Example
Take an original date of 18 July 2015, checked on 18 July 2026. Exactly 11 years have been completed, and because today is the anniversary itself, the next anniversary is 2026-07-18 with 0 days to go — you are celebrating the 11th anniversary today. A year from now the counter would point at the 12th, and milestone years such as the 25th (silver) or 50th (gold) are flagged with their traditional gift.
How it works
The calculator counts completed years from the original date to today: the year difference, minus one if this year's anniversary month and day have not yet arrived. The next anniversary is the same month and day in the current year, or in the following year if it has already passed; when today matches the anniversary exactly, days-until shows 0 and the anniversary number refers to today's celebration. Days until are counted in whole calendar days, and everything updates instantly as you change the date.
Good to know
Anniversary gift lists come in two flavours. The traditional list, popularised in the 19th century and expanded in the 1920s and 1930s, assigns materials that grow in durability and value: 1st paper, 5th wood, 10th tin or aluminium, 25th silver, 50th gold and 60th diamond. The modern list swaps some of these for contemporary items — clocks for the 1st, silverware for the 5th, diamond jewellery for the 10th — while the big milestones (silver, gold, diamond) are the same on both lists. Neither is binding; they are conventions that make gift-choosing easier.
Leap-day anniversaries need a house rule. If the original date is 29 February, the exact date only exists every fourth year, so in common years couples celebrate on 28 February or 1 March. This calculator rolls a 29 February anniversary to 1 March in non-leap years, which matches how most legal systems age a 29 February birthdate. Whichever convention you pick, the completed-years count is unaffected — only the party date moves.
The tool is not just for weddings. Work anniversaries drive tenure awards and vesting cliffs, sobriety and quit-smoking dates anchor recovery milestones, and adoption days, first-date anniversaries and business founding dates all follow the same arithmetic. For work anniversaries, note that HR systems sometimes measure service in completed months or count the hire date exclusive of the first day — if a benefit hinges on the number, check how your employer counts before assuming.
Milestone planning benefits from the days-until figure. Venues for silver and gold celebrations book out months ahead, and surprise parties need lead time for invitations and travel. A practical rhythm: at 90 days out, book the venue and photographer; at 30 days, send invitations; in the final week, confirm numbers and order the cake. If the anniversary lands midweek, most people celebrate on the nearest weekend — the counter still tells you the true date, so cards and toasts can land on the day itself.
Frequently asked questions
How does the calculator count completed years?
It takes the difference in calendar years between the original date and today, then subtracts one if this year's anniversary month and day have not arrived yet. On the anniversary itself the year increments, so a couple married on 18 July 2015 completes 11 years on 18 July 2026.
What are the traditional anniversary gifts?
The best-known traditional materials are paper for the 1st, wood for the 5th, tin for the 10th, silver for the 25th, gold for the 50th and diamond for the 60th. The modern list substitutes items like clocks for the 1st and diamond jewellery for the 10th, but the silver, gold and diamond milestones are shared by both.
What happens if the anniversary falls on 29 February?
The exact date exists only in leap years, so in common years people celebrate on 28 February or 1 March. This calculator rolls a 29 February anniversary to 1 March in non-leap years, mirroring how most jurisdictions treat leap-day birthdays; the completed-years count is unaffected.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No — this calculator runs entirely in your browser. The dates you enter never leave your device, and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
People also ask
How do I work out which wedding anniversary it is?
Count the completed years since the wedding date: the anniversary number equals the years completed on that date. A wedding on 18 July 2015 makes 18 July 2026 the 11th anniversary, and the day itself counts — days-until shows 0 on the anniversary.
Which anniversaries are the big milestones?
The 25th (silver), 50th (golden) and 60th (diamond) are the classic milestones, with the 1st (paper), 5th (wood) and 10th (tin) as popular early markers. Many couples also make round numbers like the 20th, 30th and 40th an occasion.
Does this work for work anniversaries and sobriety dates?
Yes. Any recurring yearly date works the same way — hire dates, sobriety dates, adoption days or founding dates. Just note that HR systems may count service slightly differently, so verify with your employer if a benefit depends on the exact figure.
