Pressure conversion sits behind everyday tasks that rarely advertise it: checking a tire against a manufacturer's spec, sizing a pump or air compressor, reading a weather barometer, calibrating a vacuum chamber, or interpreting a blood-pressure or HVAC gauge. The trouble is that pressure gets reported in a different unit depending on who built the device — a German tire chart in bar, an American one in PSI, a lab manometer in torr, and an aviation altimeter in inches of mercury — so moving between fields almost always means moving between units.

These nine units come from three different worlds. The pascal (and its kilo- and mega- multiples) is the pure SI unit, defined as one newton spread over one square metre. The bar and atmosphere are metric-era "convenience" units sized to roughly match air pressure at sea level. PSI is the imperial/US-customary survivor, pounds-force per square inch. And millimetre of mercury, torr, and inch of mercury are the old fluid-column units, born from literally measuring how high a pillar of mercury a pressure could hold up.

A few rules of thumb make the relationships memorable: 1 bar is almost exactly 1 atmosphere (1.01325 bar) and equals 100 kPa, while standard atmosphere is about 14.7 PSI, 760 mmHg, and 29.92 inHg. For quick mental math, bar to PSI is "times 14.5", and the torr is defined to be identical to the millimetre of mercury, so those two numbers are interchangeable to the precision most people need.

The most common mistake is mixing up gauge and absolute pressure: a tire reading "32 PSI" is gauge (above the surrounding air), whereas a converter works in raw unit ratios and won't add or subtract the ~14.7 PSI of atmosphere for you. Also watch the small definitional gaps — mmHg and torr differ from each other by under two parts per million, and inHg depends on a reference temperature for mercury's density, so a result that looks "off" in the last digit is usually rounding, not error.
